An Easy Way to Reduce Blue Light While Reading at Night

You may have heard the recent studies finding that our exposure to blue light at night (from LED and CFL lights, computer screens, etc.) has an adverse effect on our sleep patterns. Click on the two links above for more information on the findings.

I have been trying to reduce my exposure to blue light at night and have found that installing f.lux on my laptop to be a great help. When I step away from the computer (it happens sometimes) to do some reading, the bright blue LED reading light clipped to the Kindle, on the other hand, did not help.

So I devised a solution: packing tape and an orange permanent marker.

Do I even have to tell you what to do next? Take packing tape, tape it to the light, scribble with the orange marker until your heart is content. I have also used glass stain (can be found in the kid’s crafts section of most arts and crafts stores for about $3).

Easy peasy!

For more interesting reads on sleep, check out this BBC article on “biphasic” sleep (or how sleeping for 10-12 hours and waking up in the middle of the night to get a snack may not be all the bad for you). Here’s another article. Enjoy this excuse to get SO MUCH SLEEP!
